Donna (XYL) and I love to go on “Great Adventures” so this time we headed to Big Bend Country in southwest Texas. On the way south from our home in Colorado Springs, we made a stop in Roswell, New Mexico.

Roswell is the site of the 1947 crash of a UFO in a nearby field. If you don’t believe in UFOs, you should visit their International UFO Museum and Research Center. You will be convinced like I was. Hi Hi. That evening I had a problematic attempt to activate Bottomless Lake State Park (KFF-2687) with only 16 QSOs on 40m. The problem turned out to be failed tuning of the vertical causing the K3 to act up. I don’t know why, but a changed vertical tuning made the problem go away. Next day we traveled to Ft Davis TX. FAQ about new WWFF references

Tags

In my first one and a half week as EU Coordinator, I have seen some confusion about adding new areas to the WWFF programWe can´t run a global Flora Fauna Program without rules. From my point of view, we have a few simple rules in World Wide Flora Fauna. Most of them from the very beginning. See: GLOBAL RULES. In this Article I will try to sort out a few issues and questions.

1.When does an area qualify for a new number ?

Most of the areas qualifying for WWFF can be found at https://www.protectedplanet.net/

Not all areas in Protected Planet can be used, it has to be in one of the following Categories :

  • IUCN (Catagoty Ia to VI)

  • Natura2000

  • Natural World Heritage Sites

  • Biosphere Reserves

  • Ramsar

  • Marine Protected Areas

Each National Program can adopt up to 200 new references per calendar year.

The National Coordinator in each Contry have the mandate to decide which areas.

Activators have to apply proposals for new refs to their National Coordinator. Continue reading

This past Wednesday I woke up at 3:00am, with temperatures just under 30 degrees Fahrenheit (-1 C) and made my way to the Harrisburg Airport in my home state of Pennsylvania.  By the end of the day I was setting up my radio equipment in Oleta River State Park for another WWFF-KFF activation just outside Miami, Florida, where temperatures were 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 C).  It’s nice to experience some warm weather in February!

Denise and I got up at 6.30am to walk our dog before having breakfast and setting out for Dunwich on the Suffolk coast.

Dingle Marshes is on the edge of the village and has a large car park so not too far to walk.

Our stations are very minimal both being QRP operators ad consist of Elecraft KX2’s with 2.5Ah Lypo batteries, a couple of camping chairs, a couple of 10m poles one for the half wave end fed vertical (with a 1m extension to the pole) and the other for the link dipole for the 40/20m inverted V.

ONFF-0573 is a very small area in north-east Belgium.

This was the maiden-test for my new home-brew linked dipole. The test was more than satisfying :

257 QSO’s in 4 continents (EU, AS, NA, AF) and 34 DXCC. 5 Park2Park QSO’s and very happy to hear the USA peeps hunting for the European WWFF refs !!! Have about 20 USA calls in the log, signals peaked to real 599.
